Questions
What is an IP address?
The number that identifies your connection on the internet. Every website you visit sees it, because that is where it sends its answer. At home it usually belongs to your router, so every device in the house shows the same address.
What is the hostname?
The name your internet provider gave your address (reverse DNS). It often shows the provider and sometimes the region. Not every address has one.
How exact is the country?
The country comes from a public database of address ranges and is right for nearly everyone. It never shows your street or city: an IP address does not reveal where you live.
How do I hide my IP address?
Use a VPN, the Tor Browser or a proxy: websites then see the address of that service instead of yours. Reload this page afterwards to check that it worked.
Can I get my IP address in a script?
Yes: curl https://vanghosting.com/ip/ prints only the address, and https://vanghosting.com/ip/?format=json gives the address, hostname and country as JSON.
Countries: IP Geolocation by DB-IP.
Need a server with a fixed IP address?
We host websites, APIs, products and servers on our own machines since 1996, with free HTTPS and daily backups.
